Dr. Burkhard Rauhut was born in 1942 in Berlin, Germany. He was awarded a MSc in Mathematics in 1966 from University Goettingen and his PhD from University Karlsruhe in 1970. In 1972 he became Extracurricular Professor at University Karlsruhe and in 1973 he was appointed as Full Professor for Statistics at RWTH Aachen University. His main field of research was Insurance Mathematics, Statistical Decision Theory, Game Theory and Statistics of Extremes. He has written and edited several books in these fields and published over 50 articles in international scientific journals. He was Visiting Professor at University of Oregon and Florida Atlantic University, USA. From 1983 until 1990 he was the Head of Department of Mathematics and from 1990 until 1992 Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at RWTH Aachen University. From 1997 until 1999 he acted as Vice-Rector and from 1999 until 2008 as Rector of RWTH Aachen. In September, 2008 he became the founding Rector of the German University of Technology in Oman. Dr. Rauhut has been a member or chairman in over sixty Advisory Boards, Boards of Directors, Foundation Boards and Steering Committees. From 2004 until 2008 he was Vice-President of the German Rector’s conference and Acting President from 2005 until 2006.
